Teacher Training for Basic Skills Teachers in Post 16 sectors

The main aim of the Teacher Training programme in Wales is to strengthen the quality of basic skills teaching in the post-16 sector and to ensure that providers have sufficient capacity to support substantial improvements in basic skills levels in Wales.

Through the Basic Skills Strategy for Wales, the Agency has developed and continues to deliver intensive training linked to the introduction of the core curricula for adults. Letters have been sent to organisations inviting applications for the final round of courses to be held between October 2004 and March 2005.

More recently, the Agency has developed and piloted courses to support basic skills teaching qualifications at level 2 in the National Qualifications Framework and is now working on a course at level 3 to enable teachers to develop subject and pedagogical knowledge and prepare them for progression to level 4. The Agency is working with an HE institution currently to develop a Level 4 Literacy Specialist qualification. Both the level 3 and 4 courses will be piloted in the autumn of 2004.

Additional training is available through the National Support Projects.
