New Welsh Financial Literacy project

The Basic Skills Agency is developing a Financial Literacy project in Wales. The aim of the project is to use Financial Literacy as a context for improving literacy and numeracy skills in addition to improving financial capabilities. The key elements of the project will include organising training events for practitioners, maintaining a financial literacy website, facilitating events to share information and best practice, providing up to date resources and building up an overview of current work in Wales. If you are currently involved with Basic Skills or Financial Literacy education, or wish to discuss any aspect of the project’s work further, please get in touch:

Award winning Police ESOL

Launched in October last year, the Police ESOL publication – produced by Cardiff Police and Cardiff ESOL department in conjunction with the Basic Skills Agency – aimed to develop English language skills in the context of improving community safety and communications between the police and minority linguistic communities. Since October, it has been warmly welcomed and received across England and Wales and more recently throughout Europe too.

The scheme has been promoted in south Yorkshire and information cascaded to all police forces across England and Wales. Earlier in the year Police ESOL was presented at the European Seminar on the Labour Market Integration of Migrants, held in Madrid. The presentation generated a great deal of interest throughout the 25 EU member states. In June PC Vince Donovan, Community Safety Officer in Cardiff, was awarded the inaugural Award for Diversity within South Wales Police and as a result, Police ESOL has been entered for a National Police Award.

Police ESOL is available to buy for £8 plus VAT. Buy online or call 0870 600 2400 quoting order code A1785.

Push for life

In June over 120 mums and children from the Rhyl Language and Play group took part in a ‘Push for Life’ pushing prams and buggies along Rhyl promenade. The event was organised by Denbighshire’s LAP team for those unable to take part in June’s Race for Life due to childcare commitments. The one-mile walk raised over £200 for Cancer Research UK.

The Language and Play programme is part of our early years strategy to help ensure that children are better prepared for learning. It introduces parents and young children to the concept of language in the context of play. We also have a supporting programme called Number and Play in all LEAs.

Practice worth sharing: Gurkha Language and Play programme, Brecon

In November 2004, Powys LEA set up a Language and Play scheme for the wives of Gurkha soldiers and their young children. Funding from the Basic Skills Agency allowed the purchase of resources and the time of a Language and Play Coordinator. Now the scheme is fully embedded and self-supporting. In total 42 women have attended the sessions with their 59 children.

Read how songs, crafts, books and games are used in the sessions to engage the families and to develop early language and number skills in the children.
