World Book Day 2007 – Prisoners break out new Quick Reads

On 1 March, World Book Day, Dame Tanni Grey Thompson, athlete and Quick Reads author, and Jane Davidson, Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning, launched the new Welsh Stori Sydyn/Quick Reads titles with inmates at Cardiff Prison. Quick Reads have already been widely used by literacy programmes in prisons and Vanessa Newton, Head of Learning Skills at Cardiff Prison, was delighted to host the launch of the eight new titles and highlight their learning programme. Find out more about the launch, about Quick Reads and the new ‘Reading Communities’ campaign – taking place in Caernarfon, Aberystwyth and Swansea during March – on the website.

RMWW: Activities, resources and news

Over 1000 Welsh schools have now registered for the Read a Million Words in Wales campaign. Schools that haven’t yet done so can still register to take part and receive a pack of RMWW posters, reading diaries, teachers’ packs, banners, stickers and other resources. The website – www.readamillionwordsinwales.org.uk – is another great source of word-related activities for children, such as word bingo, word searches, fortune teller games and e-cards. Parents, teachers and partners can access up-to-date information on news, competitions and events and download resources. Remember, anything read on the website counts towards the million word target, so what are you waiting for?

Basic Skills Agency Executive Director for Wales, Toni Schiavone, presented the Quality Mark to Principal Glyn Jones at a ceremony to celebrate the award saying, ‘To gain the Quality Mark for the second time, Pembrokeshire College demonstrated a commitment that has embedded basic skills into the life of the college beyond the baseline that will greatly benefit students and the community they serve.’

Practice worth sharing - Family programmes work within prisons

Louise Richards, Reader in Residence, writes about her work in Welsh prisons with inmates and their families. With funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation – as part of the ‘Free with Words’ Library funding scheme – and partial funding from the Basic Skills Agency and BBC RaW, Louise and her team provide support in reading and creative writing.
