Major new literacy campaign for primary schools in Wales

Do you know a champion school? Prove it! The Read a Million Words in Wales(RMWW) campaign will be launched in February. We will be asking everyone associated with primary schools – not just pupils but teachers, parents, cleaning staff, governors, kitchen staff and lollipop men and women – to help the school read a million words in 2007. Reading isn’t just about books, so websites, signs, magazines and menus, in fact anything with words on it, will count towards the school’s one million word goal. We will be making funding available to each LEA to enable them to work with primary schools. We hope you agree that this campaign offers new and exciting opportunities to engage and enthuse children, parents and others about reading, so register now to be a RMWW Champion School and request your pack of RMWW resources (to be distributed in January). In addition, if you have any queries or comments email promotionandmarketing@basic-skills.co.uk.

Read with me

If you’ve been to a Language and Play group you will know how much young children love stories and learn from them. In a new series on Planed Plant Bach, Darllen ‘da fi!, some of S4C’s favourite characters will read a story. The Basic Skills Agency and S4C are working together to bring stories and books into the lives of young children in Wales, with the aim of getting more parents to read with their children and to encourage children to seek enjoyment and pleasure from reading. Darllen ‘da fi was broadcast on Planed Plant Bach on S4C at 12.30pm every weekday from 9 October for a period of four weeks and 40 more episodes will be broadcast in 2007. The series is accompanied by a substantial bilingual website for children and their parents. Find out more at www.s4c.co.uk/darllendafi.

Papurau Bro/Quick Reads competition

An entertaining evening was had by all in Aberystwyth last Saturday night, as papurau bro (Welsh language regional newspapers) from all over Wales came together for the final of the Papurau Bro Quiz, with BBC Radio Cymru DJ Geraint Lloyd acting as quizmaster for the night. The quiz was organised by the Basic Skills Agency - with the support of the Welsh Books Council, BBC Online and BBC RaW - to raise awareness of the first four Welsh-language books in the QuickReads series: Parti Ann Haf; Jake, Dwr Dwfn; and Bran i Bob Bran. For more information on the four titles go to: www.basic-skills-wales.org/bsastrategy/en/resources/post_16/quick_reads.cfm.

CPD diploma promotes basic skills teaching

The Basic Skills Agency in partnership with six LEAs and two institutions of higher education in Wales has developed a new Diploma in Basic Skills Teaching. Available for both primary and secondary teachers, the six module Diploma outlines effective methods of supporting pupils with basic skills across the curriculum and involves teachers in trialling and evaluating the impact of these methods on pupil progress. A module handbook will be published early next year and disseminated through LEAs during the spring term. For further information please contact Maggie Pearce at maggiep@basic-skills.co.uk.
