Prior to that, she was Principal Adviser in Essex Local Authority for six years. Pat has 36 years of experience in primary and secondary school teaching and educational management - including over 15 years of work as an Adviser working on continuous professional development with teachers and school leaders.

Carol Taylor was previously Executive Director: National Development at the Agency. Prior to that she was Director of Read On - Write Away!, the literacy initiative for Derbyshire and Derby City. Garry Hawkes CBE, the Agency’s Chairman, commented: ‘The Agency plays a leading role in raising standards of basic skills – amongst all age groups - across England and Wales. Pat and Carol have the experience needed to help the Agency to build on what it has achieved, to address new challenges and to help us to look afresh at our focus, priorities and funding.’

Asked about their appointment, Carol and Pat said: ‘We are delighted to have been asked to work together as joint Interim Director of the Basic Skills Agency and we look forward to working with staff, the Board and our stakeholders over the next few months.’
